“What the fuck was that?” The deep growl under Daniel’s voice penetrated the delicious haze I’d lost myself feeling. When I looked at him, the cold in his hard eyes sliced away the scrumptious warmth that had enveloped me, all heat shuttered away, all signs that he was even remotely human, gone.
“I don’t know,” I breathed out. I wasn’t sure he needed an answer from me, but I needed to talk. That kiss had left me in tumultuous uncertainty. I didn’t know where I stood yet. Honestly, I was still having trouble with the whole standing thing.
Two feet separated us now, from where he’d stepped away. My whole body was still tuned on him, wanting him. Unsatiated desire still filled my body. He pointed a finger at me. “Stay there.”
Sure. Like I was even capable of moving at that moment.
He tapped his ear. That was the first time I realized he had a communications device at all. Had he always carried that thing there? “Zeke. What the hell is going on?”
I didn’t hear the reply, but it wasn’t good by the murderous expression on Daniel’s face. Dangerous infuriation melted away anything else that might have been construed as an emotion on his face. “How many hurt?”
“Okay. Where is he now?”
“Fuck. Okay. I’m on my way. Five minutes. Do not let him cut you out. I need to know everything he’s doing. You know his history with explosives.”
Explosives? Someone set off a bomb in this place? Who was he talking about?
He tapped off the ear piece and his gaze settled on me. Conflict filled him now. He wanted to say something to me, but he just couldn’t find the words. It was weird to see him like this, when he was normally so in control.
“Trouble in paradise?” Perhaps not everyone was as conformed as they wanted them to be. I needed to meet this person.
It amazed me how well he turned off that human component like a light switch. One minute he was hard against my crotch and touching me in ways I’d not been touched in weeks. The next, he was smoothing his jacket down and saying, “I’ll have the guards move you to your new quarters.”
“I have to go. I’m putting the whole complex on lockdown so…”
“…do not fucking leave the room until I say it’s okay.”
“Are you running from me?” I asked.
His eyes rolled, the only acknowledgment he had heard my question and briskly walked to the door. He looked back at me without opening the door. “We will discuss this later.”
“I can’t wait.”
Daniel stopped at the door, those icy blues casing over me. “I told you there were worse things than Section Five. Things worse than death.”
I didn’t say anything. I wasn’t entirely sure what to say.
He studied me for a long moment and for a second, I saw the Daniel that had just kissed the shit out of me, the one that had left me aching for him. “I know you’re nervous about this new life for you. Follow the rules, and you’ll be fine.”
“I don’t really have a choice, do I?” Even my hoarse whisper echoed in the cold and empty room. My body still rang from proximity to him, craving the rough touch he had given me.
For a moment, I thought Daniel was going to come back to me, kiss me, and make me forget everything bad. A brief flutter passed over his eyes, something I didn’t recognize, but maybe I should have.
“There is always a choice, Naomi.”
And then it was gone.
“Yes.” He sighed. “The choice is yours. Pick the right one, because the wrong one will get you killed.”
Was that a threat or a promise? I wasn’t sure. And I had no time to ask. He opened the door and was gone, the large metal door banging shut behind him, loud and overwhelming. I slid down the wall to the floor as my knees buckled under my weight.
My body shook hard, like it had been waiting to fall apart until Daniel had left. He’d left a huge imprint on my soul from our encounter, deep where no one had ever gone before. I was sure I had the scar to prove it.
I dropped my head to my knees and exhaled deeply. This mistake was going to haunt me for good. Nothing good could come from that kiss. But I couldn’t stop myself from wanting another. And another.
God, I was a total sucker.
